Hot glue: stick with it

The bottoms keep falling out of the drawers in my van, due to the force of the magnet at the back. I got some 9mm quarter round beading and glued small pieces underneath with a hot-glue gun. The glue gun is also great for refixing all those bits of trim that were starting to come away.

Step right up

In wet weather, aluminium caravan steps can be dangerously slippery. The solution is a rubber-backed outdoor mat (available from most DIY suppliers). Cut it to the size of each step and attach it using cable ties for a non-slip surface.

Make your fridge cool

Save your old computer fans and make your caravan fridge more efficient. Simply mount two fans to a wooden frame and attach this using hooks to the outside vent. This will extract hot air from the fridge vents and improve air circulation, which is particularly useful when the weather is hot and the vents are inside an awning. The fans run on 12V DC and use little current.

Get the picture – not a cold

When your pitch has a TV-aerial socket on the EHU post, you'll generally open your window a bit and push out a cable to make the connection. But then you can't close the blind fully, and in winter a draught may well blow in through the opening. To prevent this, I fitted a bulkhead aerial socket in the battery box and wired it to the cupboard next to the aerial amplifier. Now I simply plug the cable from the EHU post into the battery box and the cable from the TV to the socket in the cupboard. I don't have to disconnect before going to bed and I can close the window completely.

Back-seat Rover

If you take your dogs touring, you ought to make sure they're safe and comfortable while in transit. We put ours in the back seat in a sling, which is easy to make: take a blanket and strongly stitch a loop of fabric near each corner. Pull the loops over the headrests. Or buy something similar (left) for £20 from www.cn-ice.com.
