A wealth of history and stunning architecture, just across the English Channel Once you’re ready for a trip overseas, it’s tempting to go the whole hog and hurtle hundreds of miles south. But don’t overlook the many attractions available on your doorstep, or at least just the other side of the English Channel.
We took a three-day holiday based between Honfleur and Cherbourg, never straying more than about 30 miles from the coast. The area is served by sailings from Portsmouth and Poole to Cherbourg and from Portsmouth to Caen/Le Havre.
By making use of the services of Camping Cheque, we were able to stay in four-star sites at two-star prices. The scheme has 350 camping and caravanning sites throughout Europe, and offers pitches outside peak season for a standard charge of E12 (£8.50) per night for two adults plus a car, van and electric hook-up.
We visited museums and memorials to mark France’s liberation in 1944, cider and liqueur makers, exclusive boutiques and an artists’ colony.
