Your essential guide to caravanning in The Highlands

Highlands
You'd be hard pressed to find anywhere more beautiful than the Highlands of Scotland. The area around Fort William, with its stunning lochs, rugged glens and majestic mountains could lay claim to being the most beautiful part of this wonderful region.
Whatever mood the weather is in, the scenery in this part of Scotland is simply breathtaking. So changeable is the climate that the same view can present many different faces on the same day. In clear, sunny weather the landscape comes to life with vivid greens and rich, earthy browns. On wetter, wilder days the character of the land shifts to match: craggy rocks emerge through the mist as threatening clouds scud across the mountainsides; then, in a moment, the sky can clear and bathe the land in sunlight once again.
The history of the Highlands is as dramatic as the weather. From clan rivalries to the Glencoe Massacre to the arrival of Bonnie Prince Charlie on the shores of Loch Shiel, the story of the Highlands has been a mixture of blood and guts, treachery, courage and heroism. Many of the most fascinating tourist attractions in the region take you back to this violent but fascinating past.
If it's excitement you're after, the Highlands can provide that, too. Fort William describes itself as the "outdoor capital of the UK", and it's easy to see why. For a start, there are fantastic walks to take and some of the best mountain bike trails in Britain. Or, if you've a mind to try something different and adventurous, there are all manner of water sports and other outdoor pursuits to get your adrenaline pumping.
Whether you want to relax and breathe in the pure Highland air, uncover the past or go white-water rafting, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
