Open 12 March-15 November
Situated just off the A591 before the road drops downhill into the town of Keswick, this site enjoys stunning views over the valleys of Derwent Water and Bassenthwaite, and the fells that surround them. The lane to Castlerigg is narrow, but leads up to a wide-gated entrance and reception area.
Guests are allocated a pitch by the very friendly staff, who also show visitors where their particular spot is on a site map and provide them with a comprehensive information pack – a nice personal touch. Each pitch is numbered, and although the site is on a steep slope, it is carefully terraced.
There are three toilet and shower blocks, all of a good standard, with one providing a bathroom in addition to the usual showers, toilets and hand basins. This block also has a kitchen with toasters, kettles, hot plates and a microwave oven. There’s also a room with tables and chairs in which to eat your own food. The site has a well stocked shop and there are plans to extend it to include camping and caravan accessories. There is a hotel next to the site entrance, so no one has far to go for a meal.
Walkers are well looked-after; daily weather information about conditions on the mountains and valleys is available.
