The South Lakes

South Lakes
At first glance, you may think that the South Lakes lacks the drama of the northern portion of the Lake District. We urge you to look again. The area around Coniston and Windermere is a fabulous combination of gentle slopes and lake shores against a backdrop of the Langdale and Scafell pikes. There's something for people of all ages, making it just right for family holidays.
The South Lakes has been a popular destination since the 19th century, when people seeking a tranquil break from the stresses of urban life fell in love with the district. And that appeal continues today, thanks to the area's majestic mountains, dramatic skies and the still waters of the mirror-like lakes themselves. The South Lakes is one of the most beautiful regions in the country and, as part of a national park, it is there for all to enjoy. Whether your ideal holiday involves energetic walks and cycle rides, or a bit of sightseeing and gentle lake cruises, this area is a dream. What's more, with a caravan you can stay cheaply, right in the heart of it. With the South Lakes on your doorstep you are guaranteed a glorious break – just look out of the caravan window and start planning.

Contributor Jennifer Stuart-Smith was in a Coachman Pastiche which she towed with a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. "The Pathfinder is a real workhorse and is more than capable of towing my 1380kg van," she says. She found the engine to be gruff over the undulating Lakeland roads. The best way to explore the area is to ditch the car and put on your walking boots. "There are plenty of spots with great views," says Jen.

Deputy editor Nigel Donnelly had as home for the week the latest Adria Adora 532 LD, which he towed with our 2004 Kia Sorento. "It's a striking van - someone even commented that it looks rather art deco – and the Kia had no problems towing the Adora up the steep hill to the site."

Reader enthusiast Andrew Freeman, his wife Jill, daughter Emily (6) and son Ben (1 month) live just north of Chester, so the Lake District is very accessible for a short break. Andrew and his family towed their Abbey Aventura 330 with an Audi A6 2.7 TDI SE to Limefitt Park just outside Windermere. Although the Abbey is a hefty 1500kg, the Audi pulls it flawlessly while averaging a respectable 28mpg. The car is very stable when towing and it has a huge boot.
