Your essential guide to East Sussex

East Sussex Ask anyone who has holidayed in East Sussex what they find so magical about the place, and you'll get a variety of answers in keeping with the varied landscape. Some love the rolling Downland dotted with sheep; others enjoy the ambience of a traditional Sussex pub and the hoppy taste of the local beer; and almost everyone is captivated by the sea, whether their preference is for charming seaside resorts or blustery clifftop walks. The only thing you won't like about East Sussex, is forcing yourself to leave at the end of a perfect holiday.
We stayed at several sites close to Eastbourne, which gave us access to the'honeypot' between Brighton and Pevensey. This area is rich with attractions for visitors who want to find out more about the area's ancient history and local culture, and it also offers some fantastic days out for families with children. It's also an area of geographical contrasts - from the pan-flat Pevensey Levels in the east, to the undulating Downs in the middle and the sheer drop of the white cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters along the coast.
There's something about the bright light and fresh sea air of East Sussex that makes it a glorious place to stay. In fact, when the sun is shining, it's easy to understand why the county is home to acres of vineyards - it's not just the holidaymakers who revel in the climate.

TRAVEL TEAM
Adrian and Celia Reynolds have been caravanning for almost 4 years in their Elddis Crown 2000, which they tow with a Ford Galaxy 1.9TDi.

Practical Caravan's editor, Alex Newby was in her Hymer, towed by the Honda CR-V, which proved a versatile towcar for the journey.

Features editor Jennifer Stuart-Smith got her Wren back on the road after some minor repair work, and enjoyed fairly restful towing with our long-term Kia Sorento.
