Getting there
Choose from a range of options when driving from the South. You can follow the M1 northbound until it becomes the A1M at Wetherby or, if you are staying in west Northumberland, keep on the A1 until you reach the turning for the A69 towards Hexham. For the Kielder area, follow the A68, turn left onto the B6320, right at Bellingham, and then follow
the signs for Kielder Water. Alternatively, travel along the M6 until junction 44, then turn right at the roundabout onto the A7. After nine miles, turn right onto the B7201, keep right onto the B6357 and follow the signs for Kielder Water.
From western Scotland, follow the A74M or the A7 to Carlisle where you can join the A69 eastbound. From East Scotland, follow either the A68 or the A1 south.
Rainy days
If Alnwick Castle whets your children's appetite for all things fortified, head for Castle Mania (tel 01665 714 888) in the Coquet Enterprise Park. The three-storey indoor play frame is designed to resemble a fortress and lets children under 12 give full reign to their imaginations.
Waterworld (tel 01661 833 144) in Prudhoe has an 25m indoor fun pool with waves, slides and water features, promising fun for all the family. The centre also has a café.
You'll find cinemas in Alnwick (tel 01665 510 785), Berwick (tel 01289 307 769) and Hexham (tel 01434 601 144).
Our favourite spot is Barter Books in Alnwick (tel 01665 604 888), one of Britain's largest second-hand bookstores. You can spend hours in the children's section, with its toys and a model railway operating overhead. Drinks are on sale and there are seating areas with open fireplaces.
