| Your essential guide to caravanning in County Wicklow |
|
If you're the sort of keen caravanner who uses their tourer at any given opportunity, you might sometimes feel as if you're running out of places in the UK to visit. If a trip to the Continent seems too foreign, then you'll find this month's Great Escape destination to be the ideal compromise. Ireland is foreign yet familiar. It has a different currency yet the same spoken language, and a history shared with the UK but an identity all of its own.
The trappings of Dublin are an obvious choice but we wanted to escape the hustle-and-bustle, and all-night party atmosphere of the capital in search of a slower pace of life. As we rolled off the ferry at Dublin Port we turned our outfits south for the mountains that loom on the horizon. Within an hour we were in another world, one of gorse-fringed rolling hills, bracken-covered headland, traffic-free roads and golden beaches, yet still just a 40-minute train journey from the city centre. Which all adds weight to the argument that County Wicklow is perhaps not just a good alternative location for a touring break but actually a perfect caravanning holiday hotspot.
