| Your essential guide to the English Riviera |

When you visit South Devon's Tor Bay it is easy to see why it has drawn generations of holidaymakers. It boasts a patchwork of lush fields and rolling hills, with glittering river valleys, all hugging a coast of golden dunes, broad stretches of sand and quaint fishing villages.
'English Riviera' is a fitting nickname for Dartmouth and
the other resort towns close to it, which bring together palm
trees and an air of late Victorian gentility. A favourable climate and rich soil produce an abundance of plant life, from the manicured seafront gardens of Torquay to the wild plants flourishing along cliff walks. In fact, UNESCO recently designated the region as the UK's first Biosphere Reserve,
an area of international importance because of its diversity and abundance of rare plants.
There are many ways to explore the countryside, whether you prefer walking, cycling or pony trekking. Or you may simply enjoy a day of exploring rock pools and paddling in
the sea. You can even get a taste of life here before it became a tourist hotspot – at Cockington village, for example, where thatched cottages and horse-drawn carriages set the tone.
Many famous names are associated with this area, from writers such as Robert Graves and Agatha Christie to the America sewing machine magnate, Issac Merrit Singer, who built an estate at Paignton. All were enchanted by the area's natural beauty and relaxing climate, which are much like those of the French Riviera – but this one is much easier to get to.
